Decolonsing Disability
This report presents findings from the VX Lab – Decolonising Disability which took place in spring 2025 at Bristol Old Vic.
The Lab revealed that inclusion must move beyond tokenism whilst many existing disability frameworks, rooted in white Western perspectives, fail to reflect the lived experience of Global Majority artists and need to be reimagined
The report recommends that inclusive creative spaces should be led by those with lived experience, particularly Global Majority disabled artists, allowing them to bring their whole selves with emotional, structural, and financial support. Access must be a shared responsibility, with flexible budgeting and training to remove barriers.
The findings and recommendations presented encourage the sector to embrace a mindset of expansion, or as the artists put it, to make the tent bigger.
